Lynleigh Greig

Lynleigh grew up in the bush in Zimbabwe where it was fairly common to find a puff adder slithering in through the back-door or a vervet monkey sitting on top of a pile of laundry. As a young kid, Lynleigh would pick up, cuddle and feed any creature that passed through the family’s wild African backyard - everything from squirrels and scorpions to chameleons and cobras
Being a volunteer of 13 years with Sydney Wildlife Rescue has allowed Lynleigh to rescue and rehabilitate some amazing Australian creatures such as death adders, eagles, echidnas, kangaroos and a variety of other gorgeous animals.
Together with Joan Reid and a team of other brilliant volunteers, Lynleigh helped to establish Sydney Wildlife’s Mobile Care Unit which is run as a wildlife-only veterinary clinic, staffed by volunteer vets. It is also able to be deployed to areas affected by natural disasters such as bushfires, floods and heat stress events. The Mobile Care Unit spent 3 months in various fire grounds during the 2020 Black Summer bushfires, treating fire-affected wildlife. As Lynleigh is trained to dart/tranquillise injured animals, she formed.
part of the Search & Rescue teams on the South Coast, in the Blue Mountains and in the Snowy Mountains.

Lynleigh was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) last year for services to wildlife and conservation.

She has also won a couple of other interesting awards:

• One from the Police Department for assisting them with snake identification and training
• One from Council on Australia Day for helping local communities to resolve critter crises
• One from Minister Rob Stokes titled “Pittwater Woman of the Year” (which she would NOT have won if the title had been Pittwater Lady of the Year… she ain’t much of a lady…!)

“If you’re looking for appreciation, financial rewards and endless admiration… Don’t become a wildlife rescuer!

But if you care about those that are wild, majestic and untameable... and the privilege of crossing paths with them is the only thanks you need... then you were born to be a wildlife rescuer”
